Disaster and Emergency Communication

The first hours of a disaster are when communication is needed most and available least. In the 6 February earthquakes, 2,800 of the 6,350 base stations in the region went out within seconds; once power and backhaul were lost, those still standing fell silent within hours. BosNets fills that gap without needing any network at all. While a network stands, phones connect over the internet; when it collapses, they connect through the BosMag devices beside them and those devices form a mesh network among themselves. Teams exchange written messages, share their location and raise an emergency alert with one press, while the coordination centre sees the field on a single screen. The switch is automatic and all communication is recorded, leaving a verifiable log for post-disaster reporting.

Why communication breaks in a disaster

A network collapse is not a single fault; it is a chain reaction.

  • When mains power fails, base stations run for a limited time on generators and batteries — and fall silent entirely once backhaul is cut.
  • Everyone loads onto the stations still standing at once; capacity fills and calls, SMS and data traffic effectively stop.
  • Collapse sites, rural and mountainous areas were outside coverage to begin with.
  • Voice radio leaves no trace; which team reported what is missing from the record afterwards.

BosNets is unaffected because it does not depend on that network at all.

How it is set up in the field

No installation required

The BosMag attaches to a phone straight out of the box and pairs with BosApp over Bluetooth. No cabling, antenna mast, SIM card or frequency allocation is needed; the devices run on the licence-free 869.4-869.65 MHz band.

The network grows with the team

Every device that joins is also a relay. As a team spreads across a collapse site, the devices in between carry the signal and coverage expands on its own.

BosBase steps in on large sites

If the area is very large or the terrain cuts the signal, the solar-powered BosBase relay station is placed at a high point or on a vehicle roof to widen coverage.

Closed networks for public institutions

When a private closed communication network is set up for an institution, communication data stays on that institution's own server and never leaves it. The institution decides who may join the network and how teams and permissions are defined.

This structure is preferred by public institutions and relief units carrying data confidentiality obligations. The network keeps working the same way whether or not an internet connection is present.

How long does setup take during a disaster?

There is no separate setup step. Once the device is attached to a phone and paired with the app, the network exists; a team can communicate the moment it arrives on site.

How long does it last without mains power?

BosMag offers 48 hours of battery life. The BosBase relay station draws its power from the sun and runs continuously without any mains supply.

As a public institution, can we run our own network?

Yes. On a private closed network the data stays on the institution's own server, and membership and permissions are managed by the institution.

Are records kept for post-disaster reporting?

All communication is timestamped and viewed through the BosLog desktop application. The records can be used for incident analysis and legal traceability.
